MAY 12 – Solo: 4’33″ as an act to transgress
Drawing from the critical theories on education of Paulo Freire and bell hooks, I will evaluate John Cage’s 4’33’’ in terms of transgression as a pedagogical aim.  In bell hooks’s unique perspective of critical pedagogy, to transgress is “movement against and beyond boundaries.”  Within this scope, I will examine 4’33’’ in terms of the boundaries both invented (that is, infringement upon) and broken (movement beyond).  I will argue that the treatments of boundary in 4’33’’ at once infringe upon establishment through its specifications, and break through, passed and beyond boundaries through dynamic non-specifications.
